Green tech business Njord launches Njord Accelerator, an initiative aimed at accelerating the adoption of emerging green technologies to decarbonise the shipping industry.
The potential of reducing the energy consumption on board an existing vessel with Njord is 6 to 16 percent. If Njord adds the Accelerator technologies that it is working on now, it can triple that reduction.
Numerous technologies that can cut fuel consumption and emissions from vessels are being developed continuously, yet, they often face difficulties finding their way into the market at scale.
Njord Accelerator presents a solution that facilitates the validation and market entry of cutting-edge technologies from emerging suppliers and drives the widespread adoption of green technology.
“In order to be adopted in the industry, every new technology needs extensive testing on a large amount of vessels to prove its effect. One difficulty for suppliers is that they may lack access to trial vessels,” explains Steen Sander Jacobsen, Technical Director at Njord.
“At the same time, shipowners find it difficult to choose the right technologies to test on their vessels,” he explains. “Njord Accelerator fills a critical gap in the market by connecting suppliers and owners, ultimately benefiting the industry at large by facilitating a higher adoption of energy efficiency devices.”
Through its vast network of shipowners and charterers, Njord will serve as a gateway for pilot vessels and subsequent fleet integration, enabling rapid scalability.
Leveraging its technical expertise and experience, Njord will actively contribute to design, refinement of novel concepts, ensuring their long-lasting effectiveness.
Additionally, Njord employs a data-driven methodology for rigorous testing and validation of emerging technologies. Through this approach, it provides concrete measurements of their efficacy.
Compatibility assessment is a key aspect of the work. Njord diligently evaluates the compatibility of new technologies with established, proven solutions. The goal is to ensure combined efficiencies that drive substantial savings and attractive payback periods. Shipowners will benefit from a streamlined approach, bypassing extensive trials, and enabling swift implementation and realization of the benefits offered by emerging technologies.
By fostering collaboration between emerging technology startups and environmentally focussed financiers and investors Njord Accelerator opens doors for funding opportunities and investment support, allowing suppliers and shipowners to scale their businesses and capitalize on the growing market for sustainable maritime solutions.
Njord today works with a wide array of equipment providers and is looking to forge further partnerships with Njord Accelerator. This includes suppliers of next-generation wind-assisted propulsion systems, innovative variations of air lubrication, onboard carbon capture and storage solutions, hull performance technologies, and other cutting-edge advancements.
Njord has worked with more than 50 owners and charterers. With Njord Accelerator, both current and future clients will have access to an even stronger portfolio of technologies to choose from.
Njord is a green technological business founded by Maersk Tankers, which aims to accelerate cost-effective and industry-wide greenhouse gas reductions. Njord helps shipowners and charterers in container, bulk, tanker and gas shipping to become more efficient by offering advisory and technical solutions that help shipowners cut emissions. It offers a full-service package, including screening for potential, designing the solution and assisting owners with the installation of energy-saving devices as well as measuring the performance of the technology.
